Requirements and Qualifications to Become ISC Members

Becoming members of the ISC is to be intended as a high privilege. Paying the chosen due (according to the chosen bracket) is certainly not enough of a qualification. ISC membership implies commitment to participate to any activity that could possibly improve the current status of the stone industry, starting from the member’s own specific education, training and certification.
The ISC with its two operative branches, marblecleaning.org and ITCS, as well as it mouthpiece, the SAM is a serious institution for serious people who understand that the only way to better the industry is to meet the demands of the final consumers. One doesn’t join the ISC to have tangible advantages right away; those who join the ISC understand that the only real and long lasting advantage is the consequence of creating a base of satisfied customers, even if that means going back to school and embracing standards and guidelines that are much more professionally and ethically demanding than the current establishment.

There are serious problems in the industry, and we need serious people to solve them. The members of the ISC appreciate the fact that stone education does not come in a bottle and can’t be summarized in a glossy brochure and a few, easy-to-remember canned blanket rules. Furthermore, stone education can’t be compromised with, because the only real education is the one coming from science, and there’s no democracy in science. Serious no-compromise standards must be enforceable, not just mere recommendations full of compromises. The ISC is not going to be run by membership consensus; one becomes member to learn, and listen, not to talk; unless, of course, one is or will become qualified enough (and recognized as such) to talk.

The standards and guidelines that the ISC will enunciate and suggest to the industry will either be accepted and implemented on a volunteer basis, or they will be enforced with the support and endorsement of the proper authorities. The ISC is more than willing to work with the current industry establishment, but it will simply not compromise science or business ethics in order not to upset a group of interested parties or another.

In conclusion, the only real requirements for becoming a member of the ISC is to understand and believe in what the ISC stands for and being willing to help toward the achievements of the ISC  goals.

In another section of this information package we gave a list of the “advantages” of becoming a member of the ISC. We forgot to list the most important and the one that really count: the main advantage for becoming an ISC member is being an ISC member. It was the great John F. Kennedy who said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country!” The members of the ISC are not asking what the ISC can do for them, but what they can do for the ISC.

Thank you.
